Best Friends Animal Society
Okay, so it’s been…seven months since my last cross country drive so here is a brief narrative of my last few days on the road..
Visiting Best Friends Animal Society was a truly a dream come true for me. They are the largest no-kill animal shelter in the country as well as provide education outreach programs and help to change legislation regarding the treatment of animals. I spent two days at Best Friends – one volunteering in one of the cat houses and other touring the grounds and soaking in the scenery. My day spent with the cats was amazing. I was assigned to a cat house that was home to about 80 cats including about 20 geriatric kitties. I was told that the best was I could help was to socialize with them so I made sure each and every kitty was lavished in attention and praise. In turn, I was hissed at, scratched, had a pan of kitty litter dumped on my head, covered in layers of fur but mostly was rewarded with napping cats in my lap, head bumps, squinty eyes and filled with a happiness I had not felt in a very long time.
